Review: EZVIZ 1080p 4-ch NVR Security Camera System (BN-1424A1)

One of the brands I have been hearing about quite a bit recently is EZVIZ. For those who have been in the IP camera game for some time, the name may be familiar. Hikvision used to call their P2P service EZVIZ, and have now spun it off into a whole different brand. So the EZVIZ 1080p 4-channel NVR Security Camera System (BN-1424A1) is basically a more user-friendly version of the Hikvision NVRs and cameras that Hikvision is famous for.

EZVIZ – who are they?

EZVIZ calls themselves an American company based in California. But we know that they are actually a brand of Hikvision. This is part of Hikvision’s new brand strategy where they position Hikvision-branded products for installers, and more consumer focused brands such as EZVIZ and more recently, HiWatch.

The NVR: CS-X4-104P

The heart of the EZVIZ BN-1424A1 is a 4 channel Network Video Recorder (NVR) which has 4 Power-over-Ethernet enabled RJ-45 ports. The exact model number is CS-X4-104P. I am happy to report that this is a real NVR and not a digitalised DVR.

The total recording bandwidth (or incoming bandwidth) of the NVR is 80 Mbps, and surprisingly it can record not just at 1080p as advertised but can record 2 channels at 4 Megapixel resolution. However it can only decode and output the streams at 1080p resolution through its HDMI out port. There is a VGA output option as well although we could not test this feature. To maximise the number of days of recordings you can store in the supplied 1TB hard drive, you can reduce the resolution to 720p, as well as dial down the fps to my recommendation of 10 fps.

There are 3 recording modes offered – manual, continuous, and motion triggered recording. There is no schedule based recording available, nor are there any advanced motion detection methods available. The recording resolutions available are: 4MP (2688*1520), 1080p, 720p/ VGA/4CIF/CIF/QVGA, & 640*360.

What about playback of recorded clips? You can hook up the NVR to a monitor or TV via VGA or HDMI. The NVR also has a web interface which you can use to live view and play back recorded clips. The NVR has two streams, the main stream at up to the full 4MP and the sub-stream for mobile view. Both streams can be run at a full 30 fps. There is a visual timeline you can search by a specific date/time or jump from event to event using the supplied remote control or USB mouse. You can also use the mobile app which supports all the features of the NVR software.

The NVR comes pre-built with a 1 or 2TB surveillance grade hard drive. You can take backups of recordings using the USB 3.0 port or the USB 2.0 port. One of the USB ports is on the front to enable quick and easy backups to an external hard drive.

On the connectivity front, there are 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports for you to plug the provided IP cameras into. These are 802.3af PoE ports and the total power available is 50W. The network port which connects the NVR to your router is a 1Gbps Ethernet port. There are no alarm inputs that can be used to trigger event recording. There is an RCA (2.0 Vp-p, 1kΩ) audio input and output each which can be used to record audio with the G.711 compression.

The EZVIZ IP Camera: CS-C3U-22ER

The EZVIZ CS-C3U-22ER camera is a 2 Megapixel IP camera that can record at a maximum resolution of 1920×1080. The lens is of the M12 mount variety, has a focal length of 4mm and a good horizontal angle of view of 85 degrees.

The ring-type infrared LED array can illuminate objects up to a distance of 20 metres or 65 feet. The cameras have a true IR-cut filter which means you get true colour in the daytime and great night vision as well.

In the night-time with Infrared off, the camera boasts of a minimum illumination of 0.028 Lux, and 0 Lux with the IR on.

Being PoE enabled, these cameras are a breeze to install compared to non-PoE models. These cameras cannot take a DC power input of 12V and can be powered only by PoE. Note that the maximum power usage is 7W. Hikvision does not claim that these cameras are ONVIF compatible.

Talking about the weather, these cameras are are rated IP66 for weather-proofing.
