Review: Samsung Wisenet 4MP 16-ch NVR Security Camera System (SNK-D5081)

So as I was researching new and exciting security products to write about, I came across some interesting NVR kits from Samsung. Now I was quite intrigued as I haven’t heard much talk about Samsung’s security camera systems.

I found the Samsung Wisenet 16-channel NVR Security Camera System (SNK-D5081) to be a very good 16-channel PoE NVR kit.

Samsung Wisenet – who are they?

While Samsung is a household name around the world, Wisenet is something you may not have come across. Unlike what the name suggests, Wisenet is a not really a Samsung brand. The Wisenet brand belongs to Hanwha Techwin, formerly known as Samsung Techwin which was founded over 40 years ago. Samsung Techwin was taken over by Hanwha in 2015 but a co-branding agreement was put in place which allows Hanwha to call its products Samsung Techwin for a limited time.

So the bottom line is that Samsung Wisenet is not really produced by Samsung any more but for all intents and purposes is just a rebranded Samsung. A smart idea given that while the Wisenet brand is hardly recognised by most people, sporting the Samsung brand may be enough to convince most people to buy them.

The NVR – Samsung SNR-D5401N/UC

Samsung SNK-D5081 NVR Security Camera System - Front View - VueVille

The Samsung SNR-D5401N/UC is a 16 channel Network Video Recorder (NVR) that has 16 Power-over-Ethernet enabled RJ-45 ports. Yes it is a proper NVR and not a DVR that has been tricked out to record to a hard drive. It runs on an embedded Linux operating system just like most NVRs in its class.

Samsung SNK-D5081 NVR Security Camera System - Back Panel View - VueVille

The total recording bandwidth of the NVR is 320 Mbps, which means it can record 480 fps at its highest resolution of 4 Megapixels. This means if you attach 16 cameras to the NVR, you can get a maximum of 30 fps per camera. That is excellent and shows how powerful this Samsung NVR really is. To maximise the number of days of recordings you can store in the supplied 3TB hard drive, you can reduce the resolution to 3MP or 2MP (1080p), as well as dial down the fps to my recommendation of 10 fps.

There are 3 recording modes offered – manual, schedule-based, and event-based recording (such as motion triggered recording). Furthermore the schedule mode can be used to either record continuously within the specified time ranges or record based on motion detection within the specified time range. The events that the camera can monitor are video loss (also called tampering detection), software-based motion detection and alarm input triggers.

When event recording is selected, the NVR can record a certain number of seconds before and after the event alarm is detected – this is called pre-recording and post-recording respectively and is a great feature to help capture those precious seconds before the actual event. You can configure up to 4 different motion detection zones to cut down on false alerts. Just select zones in the image that are not subject to constant motion, such as trees or bushes. You can also choose up to 4 privacy mask zones.

What about playback of recorded clips? You can hook up the NVR to a monitor or TV via VGA or HDMI. The NVR can even simultaneously drive two displays if you so wish. You can set up 1 admin user and up to 6 normal users with password protection. The NVR also has a web interface which you can use to live view and play back recorded clips. The NVR has two streams, the main stream at up to the full 4MP and the sub-stream for mobile view. There is a visual timeline you can search by a specific date/time or jump from event to event using the supplied remote control or USB mouse. You can also use the mobile app.

The NVR comes pre-built with a 3TB surveillance grade hard drive. You can take backups of recordings using the USB 3.0 port or the 2 USB 2.0 ports. One of the USB ports is on the front to make backups more convenient.

On the connectivity front, there are 16 Gigabit Ethernet port for you to plug the provided IP cameras into. There are a number of alarm inputs that can be used to trigger event recording. Interestingly there is also a RS-485 serial port which can be used to integrate the NVR into your home automation system. There is an RCA audio input and output each which can be used to record audio with the G.711 compression.

The IP Camera – Samsung SNC-4241BE

Samsung SNK-D5081 NVR Security Camera System - SNC-4241BE IP Camera - VueVille

The Samsung SNC-4241BE is a 4 megapixel IP camera that can record at a maximum resolution of 2592 x 1520. The lens has a focal length of 3.6mm and a good wide angle of view of 94 degrees. The ring-type infrared LED array can illuminate objects up to a distance of 25 metres or 82 feet.

Being PoE enabled, it should be easier to install these cameras compared to non-PoE models. They can take a DC power input of 12V or can be powered by PoE that the NVR supports. These cameras are ONVIF compatible but there is no indication that they will work with any NVR other than those from Samsung.

The SNC-4241BE is IP66 rated for water-proofing.
